It's Prematurity Awareness Day

Today, November 17th, was created as a day to help raise awareness on the serious issue of premature births. Although I am not a mommy yet, I wanted to help shed light on an issue that I did not think would still be such a crisis in this age of technology and health advancements.

Did you know?:

-1 in 8 babies in the U.S. is born prematurely
-while some premature babies grow normally, some will face life-long health problems
-more newborns die from premature births than from any other cause
-the rate of premature births has risen by 30% since 1981

The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching the causes of premature births and educating our communities on ways to prevent them. They have also designated the entire month of November as Prematurity Awareness Month. To find out how you can help the March of  Dimes' Prematurity Campaign to increase the number of healthy, strong babies that are born, click here.  Every baby deserves a fighting chance.

  1. Thanks for your post supporting Prematurity Awareness Day. Our twins were born at 24 weeks — that's 16 weeks early. Today is their 19th birthday. Even though we no longer think about their tough beginning every day, it's lovely to set aside one day a year to remember and fight for those still in the struggle.

  2. Thanks for posting this. My brother was born premature but has grown up into a healthy 15 year old. I've done March of Dimes walks and I encourage others to also get involved.
